HistoryThe railroad resort that changed Atlantic Beach
Location: Historic oceanfront hotel site and surrounding community
Henry Flagler opened the Continental Hotel in 1901 alongside the Florida East Coast Railway’s Mayport branch. The oceanfront resort helped transform a remote stretch of coast into a vacation community. Later renamed the Atlantic Beach Hotel, the original building burned in 1919; the story is about a former landmark, not a hotel visitors can tour today.

Beach fire permits are available only November 1–February 28. Apply in person at Adele Grage Cultural Center, 716 Ocean Boulevard. Maximum 25 attendees; cleanup by 10 p.m. The posted fee is $75 plus tax and a $150 refundable deposit. Obtain the permit and check current conditions before planning a fire.

A current ocean-beach fishing rule and any swimmer-distance or time restrictions still need confirmation with Atlantic Beach. Do not assume rules from Jacksonville Beach or Dutton Island apply here.
Shore fishing: licenses & responsible casting
Unless exempt, you need the appropriate Florida saltwater fishing license even when fishing from shore. Eligible Florida residents can obtain a no-cost shoreline license; nonresidents need a nonresident saltwater license unless an exemption applies. A license does not override local closures or swimming-area restrictions.
Check FWC’s current species, size, season and bag limits. Targeting sharks from shore has additional permit and gear requirements. Keep hooks and lines away from swimmers and wildlife, and take discarded tackle home.

The city lists a public restroom at 716 Ocean Boulevard, inland from the beach. A restroom at each oceanfront access is not confirmed. Park hours are sunrise–sunset unless posted otherwise; separate toilet hours and accessibility need confirmation.

Town Center: daily 11 a.m.–midnight; pay at kiosks or posted QR signs. 18th/19th Street accesses: 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Friday–Sunday, March 1–September 30, plus Memorial Day, July 4 and Labor Day; use posted mobile payment, not kiosks. No parking there after 9 p.m. or backing into spaces. 18th has 40 regular, four low-speed-vehicle and two disabled spaces; 19th has 14 regular (one used by guards in season) and one disabled space. Registered city residents get four free hours. September 2026 update requires registration through the new city portal; old registrations expire December 15. Disability fee-exemption duration conflicts across city pages; confirm with [email protected].
