North Hutchinson Island is a barrier island community in St. Lucie County; it is not an incorporated city.

Treasure Coast · St. Lucie County

An undeveloped North Hutchinson Island beach for a quiet picnic, shell walk or experienced surf outing. Restrooms and a loan beach wheelchair help with planning; there are no lifeguards, and submerged wartime obstacles demand caution.

Good fit: A beach picnic, shell walk and undeveloped shoreline scenery.

Plan around: No lifeguards, submerged wartime obstacles and an exact-change honor box. Confirm wheelchair availability before arrival.

Plan your visit

Bring exact change for the honor box and use the signed dune crossover. Arrange the shared loan beach wheelchair in advance by calling 772-468-3985 about an hour before arrival. Choose a land-based visit when surf conditions or underwater hazards make entering the water unsuitable.

Who can visit: Open to the general public, including visitors, during permitted hours and subject to posted rules.

Entry route, fees & access boundaries
Manager / access authority
Florida Park Service
Access basis
This listing covers a publicly managed beach access or park, not a private guest-only beach.
Where to enter
Signed Avalon State Park entrance on A1A North; designated ocean dune crossovers.
Fees & reservations
The park lists $2 admission for vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists. Pay at the honor box with exact change. Check the park page and applicable state-pass terms before relying on a pass; admission does not override a closure.
Restrictions & exceptions
Park hours, posted notices, protected dunes and designated routes apply. No lifeguards. A paid public park is distinct from temporary access availability.
What this label covers
The named park or beach entrance and its designated visitor areas. Adjacent land ownership and exact shoreline boundaries are not surveyed in this guide.

Beach ownership, the route across land, public shoreline-use rights and access to facilities are separate questions. Rules vary by state and location. Use the identified public entrance or documented permission; neither a nearby resort nor an admission fee by itself establishes that a beach is private. A mapped beach is not permission to cross private property.

Access policy reviewed 2026-10-03. Not a live closure report or a property-boundary survey.

Allowed & prohibited activities

Alcohol consumption prohibited on public state-park beaches; designated permitted event/accommodation exceptions do not authorize casual beach drinking.

Fires are allowed only in designated park areas; fireworks are prohibited. A picnic grill does not authorize a bonfire on the beach. Check staff instructions and current fire restrictions.

General state-park rules prohibit dispersed camping and overnight stays in day-use parking. An old brochure is not proof of a currently bookable campground; current campground and group-camping availability has not been established. Ask park staff before planning an overnight visit.

Weather alerts do not confirm swimming safety, lifeguard staffing, water quality or beach closures. No alert does not mean safe water.

Water quality

DOH-St. Lucie publishes periodic beach and river bacteria samples. No independently reconciled sampling-station mapping is assigned to this guide yet; use the official county results. Ocean, inlet and lagoon samples are different locations, and an old advisory or lifting notice is not today’s water status.

Crowd meter

No measured beach attendance or live occupancy series was found in the park, county or destination sources reviewed. Plan around the managed parking entrance and shared picnic facilities; this guide makes no numerical crowd score or promise of an empty beach.

Sand & sandcastles

The park describes a firm sandy underwater bottom and protected dunes behind the ocean beach. That describes swimming footing, not a measured dry-sand grain size or a continuous wheelchair route. Beach width and surface conditions vary.

Surfing is listed; hard rigid watercraft must be tethered with a leash no longer than 12 feet. Underwater obstacles require particular caution.

Shore & sky wildlife

The park identifies herons, egrets, plovers and loons, with gopher tortoises in dune and hammock habitat. Its ocean beach hosts seasonal loggerhead, green and leatherback nesting. Eagles and ospreys on the west side belong to lagoon-side habitat; no sighting is guaranteed.

History & interesting facts

This shore was a World War II Navy training ground. Steel and concrete obstacles placed offshore for landing exercises remain a swimming and snorkeling hazard. The land later became a state park; that history does not authorize artifact collection.
