Sand & entrance: At Burney Park’s American Beach access, check the transition from the park to the sand and the designated parking area. Available official information does not establish a consistently hard-packed route or show that Burney is easier than Peters Point or Scott Road.
AWD versus 4WD: Nassau permits eligible AWD, 4WD and qualifying beach buggies, subject to driver eligibility. Legal eligibility is not a capability assessment: an AWD crossover can run out of clearance or traction in deep sand, and 4WD can also become stuck.
Tides, alternatives & avoiding getting stuck
Tides & route: Check the return tide and current entrance signs. Keep within authorized vehicle zones even if wet sand elsewhere looks easier. The county’s prohibited-area map limits where you can go; do not assume you can drive between beach accesses.
Before you enter: Confirm the open vehicle zone with the attendant and inspect the approach before entering. Burney’s off-beach public lot is the fallback when sand conditions or your vehicle are unsuitable.
What makes driving easier or harder? Firm, compact sand generally offers better support than deep loose sand. Ruts, limited ground clearance, vehicle load and the need to stop or turn can make a short soft section difficult. Wet sand is not automatically safe: it may be saturated, reached by the tide or outside the legal driving area.
Prepare: Check your vehicle manual’s sand-driving guidance. Carry a shovel, traction aids, tire gauge and compressor; use vehicle- and tire-appropriate pressure advice rather than a universal PSI, and restore road pressure before paved-road travel. Keep within posted speed limits and yield to people and wildlife.
If traction is lost: Avoid repeated wheelspin, which can dig the vehicle deeper. Stop and seek suitable recovery assistance rather than pushing farther into soft sand. Check beach-recovery coverage before visiting; do not assume routine roadside assistance or park staff will tow you. Keep people clear of any recovery operation.

HistoryAmerican Beach: a haven during segregation
Location: American Beach community surrounding Burney Park
American Beach began in 1935 when the Pension Bureau of Jacksonville’s Black-owned Afro-American Life Insurance Company purchased 33 acres of Amelia Island shoreline. Company president Abraham Lincoln Lewis welcomed employees here. The community expanded, providing Black families a seaside destination during segregation, when access to many other beaches was denied. Burney Park is a public access point in this historic community; its story extends beyond the park itself.

MaVynee Betsch, Lewis’s great-granddaughter and a former opera singer, became known as the “Beach Lady” for her environmental advocacy and work preserving American Beach’s history. She fought to protect NaNa dune, now cared for by the National Park Service. The American Beach Historic District entered the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
