Official Duval County results ↗ · About Florida Healthy Beaches ↗

What these results mean

Enterococci are bacteria used to indicate possible fecal contamination. Florida describes 0–35 per 100 mL as Good, 36–70 as Moderate, and 71 or more as Poor. These are periodic laboratory samples, not continuous monitoring.

Samples more than 14 days old are marked older by The Beach Database. This is our freshness reminder, not an official advisory threshold. A “Good” sample or “No” advisory in an older report does not establish today’s conditions.

Testing does not rule out all pathogens, harmful algae, sewage spills or other hazards. Follow current posted advisories and closures. Water clarity, surf flags and bacteria results measure different things.

Walk from parkingDistance depends on parking and closures

Beach driving can reduce the walk only when the chosen zone is open and your vehicle can negotiate the sand. The city warns the Atlantic approach crosses extremely soft sand. For off-beach parking, ask staff which pedestrian route is open; no fixed walking distance or continuous firm wheelchair route is confirmed.

Accessibility: Not yet confirmed. A continuous firm wheelchair route onto the beach and a beach-wheelchair loan service have not been confirmed. Beach driving crosses very soft sand. Call 904-255-4255 to discuss mobility equipment and the best available access.

Where to enter
Huguenot Memorial Park’s public entrance; use areas currently open to visitors.
Fees & reservations
Public city park with vehicle and pedestrian admission charges. Camping requires separate registration.
Restrictions & exceptions
Capacity, tides, safety and wildlife protection can temporarily close entry or sections of beach. Those closures do not turn the park into a private beach. Beach driving has separate vehicle and sand-condition considerations.
What this label covers
The named park or beach entrance and its designated visitor areas. Adjacent land ownership and exact shoreline boundaries are not surveyed in this guide.

Beach ownership, the route across land, public shoreline-use rights and access to facilities are separate questions. Rules vary by state and location. Use the identified public entrance or documented permission; neither a nearby resort nor an admission fee by itself establishes that a beach is private. A mapped beach is not permission to cross private property.

Crowd meter

4 / 5 · Lively / busySocial drive-on beach

Typical atmosphere estimate · not live occupancy. Capacity and surf activity documented.

The city documents capacity closures, and local tourism describes an active surf gathering place. These support a provisional 4/5 busy-beach estimate, not a claim that every visit reaches capacity.

Busy days, times & seasonsPlan around weekends, holidays and local activity

Days: Planning estimate: fair-weather Saturdays, Sundays and summer holiday weekends are more likely to be busy than ordinary weekdays. No day-by-day attendance series has been verified.

Time of day: Planning estimate: late morning through midafternoon is the main beach-day window. Try the first part of the permitted opening hours for a quieter visit; no measured hourly peak is available.

Time of year: Plan for more general beach-day demand on summer weekends and holidays (editorial estimate). Local surf interest continues in cooler months when conditions are favorable.

Find a quieter visitWhere people gather & when to try

Try an ordinary weekday early in park hours and ask staff about that day’s access. Capacity, tide or safety closures can affect entry even with a reservation; do not rely on a quiet-time estimate as admission assurance.

Within this beach: Vehicles, beach setups and surfers can concentrate activity. A high-tide or wildlife closure can reduce usable space; a closure is not necessarily caused by crowds.

Quieter does not mean safer swimming or staffed lifeguards. Use posted opening hours, weather guidance and access restrictions when choosing a time.

How the meter works & sources

1 = very quiet; 2 = laid-back; 3 = moderate; 4 = lively / busy; 5 = very busy. Higher means more activity, not a better beach. Ratings compare the general daytime experience near the featured access in fair beach weather, mainly during the warm season outside major holidays. They are editorial estimates based on the evidence described above, not measured occupancy percentages or forecasts.

Weekends, events, tides and the exact part of the beach can change the experience. Parking pressure is distinguished from crowding on the sand. No beach is promised to be deserted. “Unrated” means evidence is insufficient; it does not mean empty. General timing advice is labeled as a planning estimate wherever local attendance data is unavailable.

Sand & sandcastles

Color, texture & shellsVery soft access sandCity-confirmed Atlantic vehicle approach

An exact color and mineral description has not been verified for this beach.

Jacksonville warns that the Atlantic vehicle approach has extremely soft sand. That confirms a loose access surface, not identical firmness across the whole beach.

Barefoot comfort, kids & castlesUse damp sand away from vehiclesPractical guidance · not a field-tested rating

Underfoot: Allow for a tiring walk through loose sand and difficulty pulling small-wheeled carts. Do not infer an accessible route from the fact that vehicles can enter.

Sand play: Dry loose access sand is a poor foundation for detailed castles. Select a safe open patch, add water to help it bind, and keep children well away from vehicle routes and bird closures.

Sand can become hot regardless of color. Check it before children sit or go barefoot. Tides, storms and beach nourishment can change the surface; these descriptions are not live condition reports or swimming-safety ratings.

Use open beach sand, leave dunes and nesting areas alone, fill holes and flatten castles before leaving so turtles have a clear path. FWC beach-care guidance ↗

Visit Jacksonville identifies Huguenot as a strong year-round break that often favors incoming tide and cleaner morning conditions. It is not a beginner default.

Watch for: Inlet currents, very soft sand access, vehicle traffic, jetty effects, shorebirds and changing park zones.

Current reports, cameras & social updates

SMALL FINDS, GREAT BEACH DAYS

ShellingNot yet ratedResearch pendingExplore finds & tips

Quality & what to expect

We have not yet established the quality of shelling at this particular beach. An unrated beach is not necessarily a poor beach.

Shell types & likely finds

Common shell types at this beach have not yet been verified. We will add a locally supported list rather than reuse another beach’s species.

How to look

Walk the exposed shell lines around low tide and compare several patches of wet sand. Return after rough weather only when conditions are safe. A beach full of fragments may yield few intact shells.

Collect thoughtfully

Leave living or occupied shells and live sand dollars where they are. Stay off dunes and outside wildlife closures. Use surface beachcombing; this guide does not authorize digging or entering restricted land.

Local collecting evidence still being researched.

Your chances of finding teeth

A reliable beach-specific success assessment is still needed. We are not treating a regional reputation as proof of frequent finds here.

Tooth types & likely finds

Common shark-tooth types at this beach have not yet been verified. A fossil’s color alone does not identify its species or age.

How to look

Slow down at patches of shell grit and scan for small triangular or needle-like teeth. Try exposed tide lines around low tide; finding nothing on a visit is possible even at a well-known beach.

Sea glassNot yet ratedCollection rules unconfirmedQuality, searching & collection rules +

Quality & likely finds

A reliable beach-specific assessment of sea-glass abundance, colors and well-rounded pieces is not yet available. Treat a find as a bonus to a beach walk; shelling or shark-tooth quality does not predict sea-glass quality.

Recognizing & looking for sea glass

Naturally weathered glass often has a cloudy surface and softened edges; some fragments remain sharp. Local color frequencies are unverified. Scan exposed sand and shell lines on a low-tide walk only where access is open. Never add broken glass to the beach, dig into dunes, or pick up sharp fragments barehanded. Report hazardous debris to staff.

May I take it home?

Collection rules unconfirmed. Ask Huguenot Park management about keeping surface sea glass at this access. A general beachcombing description or a ban on bringing glass containers does not settle whether found sea glass may be removed.

Reviewed September 22, 2026. Ratings describe finding or viewing quality; they never grant collection permission. Unrated means evidence is insufficient, not a score of zero.

DriftwoodNot yet ratedCheck before collectingViewing, collection rules & penalties +

What to expect

The quantity, size and condition of washed-up wood at this beach have not been verified. Driftwood can shift with tides and storms; visible wood is not automatically available to take home.

Looking without disturbing

Photograph interesting shapes where they lie. Do not drag logs, dismantle natural wood piles or disturb wildlife shelter. Keep clear of floating or shifting logs and rising tides; wood trapped in dunes should remain undisturbed.

May I take it home?

Check before collecting. A driftwood-specific permission or prohibition has not been verified for this access. Leave it in place until Huguenot Park management confirms whether removal is allowed and any size, quantity or permit limits. Do not cut trees, detach branches or remove wood from dunes. The campground’s permission to burn suitable wood in a fire ring is not permission to gather wood from the park.

Penalties & enforcement

The published park rules allow removal or eviction for rule violations and prohibit entering dunes; first-offense dune encroachment brings ejection without a refund. A driftwood-removal charge or fine has not been verified. Do not interpret these general enforcement provisions as a confirmed driftwood-specific penalty.

How our 1–5 ratings work

Sea glass uses the same scale when enough evidence is available. Driftwood scores, when shown, are for viewing only; collection permission is a separate status. Our editorial planning scale: 1 Limited · 2 Occasional · 3 Worthwhile · 4 Strong · 5 Standout. Ratings describe the appeal of a dedicated search, not the probability of a find. They are not official park scores or measured catch rates.

“Provisional” uses regional or older evidence. “Park-wide” may refer to a different shoreline from the access featured on this page. Outlined icons with “Not yet rated” mean insufficient evidence, not a score of zero. Tides, storms, sand nourishment and collecting pressure can change any visit. Species examples are labeled by geographic scope; none is a promise of a find.

What to expect

Limited appeal for a dedicated snorkeling trip. This guide has not established a sheltered, reliably clear snorkeling area or a shore-access reef at this beach. A calm day may allow a brief look, but swimming suitability alone does not establish good snorkeling.

Underwater visibility

Variable / unmeasured. No reliable beach-specific underwater visibility range in feet or meters was found. Surf can suspend sand, so surface water color is not a visibility measurement. Confirm conditions locally on the day; no season or tide guarantees clear water.

Fish & sea life

Florida sandy-shore habitat can support pompano, whiting and jacks; striped mullet also inhabit coastal waters. These are regional habitat examples, not a verified list of common underwater sightings at this beach. Beach-specific abundance and other sea-life sightings remain unconfirmed.

Entry, conditions & experience

Birds on the shore & in the skyRoyal terns, laughing gulls & brown pelicansPark colony documented

The city identifies royal terns, laughing gulls, brown pelicans and sandwich terns as members of Huguenot’s seabird colony. This is a strong place to observe coastal birds, especially during nesting activity, from outside protected areas. Species presence does not mean every bird is visible on every visit.

Sea turtles on the beachLoggerheads · seasonal nestingNortheast Florida context

May–October is the regional nesting season, with loggerheads the most common nesting sea turtle in Northeast Florida. Tracks or marked nests are more realistic things to notice on a daytime walk than an adult turtle. Nesting activity and species at this exact access have not been individually verified.

Other shore & dune wildlifeGhost crabs · habitat exampleRegional habitat; local frequency unverified

Ghost crabs live on Florida’s sandy upper beaches. Look for small burrow entrances in open sand without digging into them. This is a habitat-based possibility, not a confirmed common-animal count at this access.

Wild horsesNo local wild herd documentedSeparate destination

We have not documented a free-roaming wild-horse herd at this beach. The area’s well-known feral horses live on Cumberland Island, Georgia. Horses accompanying riders are domestic animals, not wild beach wildlife.

When to look & how to watch respectfully

Bird activity changes with tides and seasons. Scan open shoreline with binoculars, keep clear of resting flocks and stay outside nesting closures. Never feed or chase wildlife; leave dunes and burrows undisturbed. Visit only during permitted beach or park hours.

Sea-turtle nesting is seasonal, not a scheduled attraction. Keep lights and flash photography away from turtles, leave nests and hatchlings untouched, remove your gear and fill holes before leaving. Land-dwelling gopher tortoises belong on land: never put one in the ocean. For an injured or distressed sea turtle, call FWC at 1-888-404-3922 and follow responder instructions.

Alcohol
Not allowedNot allowed in the park

Park rules prohibit alcoholic beverages and glass containers, including in the campground.

Bonfires & beach fires
With restrictionsCampground fire rings only

Campfires must stay in the provided fire rings. No pallets or wood containing hazardous material. Extinguish the fire before retiring; a campground fire ring is not permission for a beach bonfire.

Beach camping
With restrictionsRegistered campsites only

Book a designated campsite and keep the camping setup within it. Day-use beach access does not authorize pitching a tent elsewhere on the shoreline.

Shore fishing
With restrictionsAllowed outside prohibited zones

Fishing is prohibited in Zone 6. Obey wildlife closures and posted boundaries. Campsites cannot be used for day-use fishing without a camping registration.

Shore fishing: licenses & responsible casting

Unless exempt, you need the appropriate Florida saltwater fishing license even when fishing from shore. Eligible Florida residents can obtain a no-cost shoreline license; nonresidents need a nonresident saltwater license unless an exemption applies. A license does not override local closures or swimming-area restrictions.

Check FWC’s current species, size, season and bag limits. Targeting sharks from shore has additional permit and gear requirements. Keep hooks and lines away from swimmers and wildlife, and take discarded tackle home.

High soft-sand concern · Atlantic approach

Editorial assessment based on the city’s explicit sand warning; not a measured stuck rate.

Sand & entrance: The city warns that reaching the Atlantic beach involves extremely soft sand. Treat the approach as a loose-sand obstacle even if sand farther along looks firmer. We have not verified a continuously hard-packed route.

AWD versus 4WD: The city strongly recommends 4WD and directs 2WD and AWD drivers to consider Family Beach or designated parking instead. AWD should not be treated as equivalent to a suitable 4WD vehicle here. Even 4WD can become stuck in deep sand or ruts.

Tides, alternatives & avoiding getting stuck

Tides & route: High tides, unsafe conditions and capacity can close vehicle access or the park. Ask staff about the route out as well as the route in; a passable entrance earlier in the day is not a promise for your return.

Before you enter: For AWD, low-clearance vehicles or inexperienced sand drivers, ask staff about the designated parking areas first. Family Beach is a city-suggested alternative, not a guarantee of firm sand or trouble-free access. Park office: 904-255-4255. Towing is at the vehicle owner’s expense.

What makes driving easier or harder? Firm, compact sand generally offers better support than deep loose sand. Ruts, limited ground clearance, vehicle load and the need to stop or turn can make a short soft section difficult. Wet sand is not automatically safe: it may be saturated, reached by the tide or outside the legal driving area.

Prepare: Check your vehicle manual’s sand-driving guidance. Carry a shovel, traction aids, tire gauge and compressor; use vehicle- and tire-appropriate pressure advice rather than a universal PSI, and restore road pressure before paved-road travel. Keep within posted speed limits and yield to people and wildlife.

If traction is lost: Avoid repeated wheelspin, which can dig the vehicle deeper. Stop and seek suitable recovery assistance rather than pushing farther into soft sand. Check beach-recovery coverage before visiting; do not assume routine roadside assistance or park staff will tow you. Keep people clear of any recovery operation.
