Parking, route & accessibility evidence

Parking & entry: See named arrival. The beach arrival has a paved parking lot but no designated accessible spaces. Use the Potomac beach parking arrival rather than the Visitor Center lot.

Accessibility: Confirm route to sand. NPS says the lot is paved, has no designated accessible spaces, and the beach approach crosses slightly sloping grass to extremely soft sand. No continuous step-free sand/water route is certified.

What this label covers
Named coastal planning reference, not surveyed boundaries or a navigation waypoint.

Beach ownership, the route across land, public shoreline-use rights and access to facilities are separate questions. Rules vary by state and location. Use the identified public entrance or documented permission; neither a nearby resort nor an admission fee by itself establishes that a beach is private. A mapped beach is not permission to cross private property.

Access policy reviewed 2026-10-25. Not a live closure report or a property-boundary survey.

Allowed & prohibited activities

Alcohol: The monument is closed to alcohol except specific non-public housing or authorized-permit situations. Ordinary public beach use has no exception.

Fires and grills: Fires are permitted only in the separate picnic area in supplied or personal grills under park conditions; this does not permit beach fires.

Overnight camping: Ordinary visitor camping is prohibited, and the park has no designated camping areas. Limited exceptions apply to NPS staff, volunteers, researchers or partners with the Superintendent’s permission, and to service organizations under a special use permit.

Shore fishing: NPS allows Potomac beach fishing under its license rules: anglers ages 16 and older need an applicable Potomac River Fisheries, Virginia saltwater, Maryland Chesapeake/coastal or reciprocal Maryland saltwater license. Certain exempt/reciprocal anglers must complete free FIP registration.
