Beaufort County beaches

Choose Hilton Head’s public Atlantic entrances for a conventional beach day, Hunting Island for a state-park visit, or a separately arranged island trip. Fish Haul and mainland tidal shores offer a different coastal setting; ocean swimming, shorebird habitat and boat arrival are not interchangeable.

Find your fit in Beaufort County

13 published guides in this county. Start with lifeguard coverage (5 qualifying beaches), then compare the named entrances. 2 guides have boat-only arrival: plan transport and the lawful landing separately. Feature counts describe documented routes, not all beaches or every entrance in the county.

Use the verified route features below to choose where to begin. Counts refer to beaches with a qualifying named entrance, not every entrance. These are planning details, not current opening or guard duty.

A few places to start

Starting points ranked by verified entrance facilities; these are not a county-wide quality ranking.

Alder Lane Beach

Entrance: 2 Woodward Avenue

Lifeguard coverage

Parking & entry: Parking & arrival

Check before going: The Town lists beach mats extending to hard-packed sand near the high-tide line. Their endpoint depends on tides and sand; they do not guarantee a continuous step-free route to the water. At listed wheelchair locations, book through the Town reservation system; the policy describes a $25 refundable card deposit and a two-day limit in seven days. Confirm equipment and collection arrangements before travel. A beach-wheelchair service at this entrance was not established; do not assume absence.

Start with the right shore

Facilities and shops: Coligny, Driessen and Folly Field list public park amenities. Forest and state park: Hunting Island has distinct admission and dog restrictions. Birdwatching: Fish Haul’s Port Royal Sound setting and signed wildlife exclusion differ from an Atlantic swim beach. Boat trips: St. Phillips requires a booked ferry/tram journey; Daufuskie transport is separate from the county beach approaches.

Hilton Head Atlantic entrances

Alder Lane Beach

A compact public Atlantic beach entrance off South Forest Beach Drive, with restrooms, outdoor showers and a mat route across soft sand. Plan around seasonal parking charges and guard coverage rather than assuming either is available year-round.

Burkes Beach

A public Atlantic shore reached from Burkes Beach Road, with parking at nearby Chaplin Community Park. The beach access and the park’s sports and dog facilities have separate footprints; seasonal guard and rental information is not current tower duty.

Coligny Beach

An Atlantic beach beside Coligny’s shops and restaurants, reached through the Town’s public beach park. Public parking is the exception to the Town’s seasonal beach parking fees; guard coverage, rentals and accessibility equipment still have their own operating limits.

Driessen Beach

A mid-island Atlantic beach approached by a boardwalk through the dunes. The public park lists a playground, picnic pavilion, restrooms and showers; its mat and reservable beach chair help with access but do not promise a continuous route to the water.

Folly Field Beach

A public Atlantic beach reached by a boardwalk and mat route off Folly Field Road. Restrooms, showers and reservable beach chairs are listed at the park; parking charges and lifeguards follow seasonal schedules.

Islanders Beach

The Town park is closed for construction September 8, 2026–May 31, 2027. The current project page describes a separate temporary north-side mulch pedestrian route; use Folly Field or Driessen if you need an accessible beach entrance or restrooms.

State park and tidal coastal shores

Fish Haul Beach

A Port Royal Sound shoreline in the historic Bay Gall area, suited to a shoreline walk and birdwatching rather than an assumed guarded Atlantic swim. Preserve the signed wildlife beach exclusion near Fish Haul Creek separately from the rest of the public park.

Hunting Island Beach

A state-park Atlantic beach backed by maritime forest, with camping and historic lighthouse interpretation nearby. Swimming is at your own risk without lifeguards; keep the hazardous Little Hunting/Boneyard bridge closure distinct from the operating park beaches.

Lands End Beach

A small Port Royal Sound shoreline on St. Helena Island, listed as public beach access by the county. The Wharf Drive beach point and Bay Point Road roster wording need reconciliation; nearby overlooks, Fort Fremont grounds and private property are not interchangeable arrivals.

The Sands Beach

A public tidal beach by Battery Creek and the Beaufort River, with a nearby boardwalk and observation tower. The Town highlights shark-tooth searching; confirm beach-specific facilities and vehicle rules rather than borrowing amenities from Live Oak Park or the ramp.

Alljoy / Brighton Beach

A public tidal May River beach also called Brighton Beach, beside a separately managed boat landing. Current county code establishes 6 a.m.–9 p.m. access; construction, exact facilities and swimming permission need their own current confirmation.

Boat-access island beaches

St. Phillips Island Beach

A natural Atlantic island beach visited through the park’s booked ferry-and-tram trips. The mainland boarding point, island dock, tram stop and final beach walk are different parts of the journey; a tour ticket does not establish unrestricted private-boat landing.

Daufuskie Island Beach

A boat-access island with two separately listed county public Atlantic beach approaches at Beach Road and Turtle Beach Road. Arrange the ferry and island transport separately; the county dock is on a different shore, and the Bloody Point dock/public-beach identity remains unresolved.

Current planning distinctions

Islanders park is closed for construction, with a separate temporary pedestrian path. The Hunting Island Boneyard bridge closure does not close the ordinary North and South entrances. Seasonal parking payment, park hours and guard duty are separate clocks.

Private and resort crossings are not assumed public. Fripp, Harbor, Sea Pines/Palmetto Dunes crossings, Pritchards, Little Capers, Bay Point and other coastal leads remain separately scoped candidates. Tour advertising does not establish unrestricted public landing or current trip availability.

Research, photos and corrections

Published-source desk review October 8, 2026. Forty-five categories were checked per guide; unanswered exact fields retain uncertainty and clarification tasks. Typical underwater clarity, shore/offshore snorkeling, full nudity and female-topless sunbathing are separately assessed.

Five archival scenic primaries are licensed and credited. Eight exact primary-photo gaps remain priority requests; neutral placeholders show no substituted beach image. This release does not certify every shoreline, same-day opening or county-wide field completeness.
