Baltimore City coastal shores

A small pebble-edged city shore for a short waterfront visit or a hand-carried kayak launch. This guide describes the named Ferry Bar shore; it does not recommend ordinary swimming or promise a staffed bathing beach.

Good fit: A short shore visit or a prepared, hand-carried kayak launch.

Plan around: Confirm parking and the park approach; no ordinary swimming or wading authorization was established.

Parking, route & accessibility evidence

Parking & entry: Parking listed · confirm approach. Baltimore Blueway lists parking for Ferry Bar Park at 2899 W Peninsula Drive; the city park GIS lists 2700 Light Street. The named public park shore and soft launch are documented, while exact parking allocation, ordinary charges and any route across the adjoining private campus remain unconfirmed. Use the named park approach, obey posted limits, and do not park on grass or use private campus spaces without authorization.

Parking source ↗

Accessibility: Exact route limits · see details. No source established a continuous step-free route from a lawful parking space to Ferry Bar’s pebble shore or a water-entry facility. The accessible kayak apparatus at separate Middle Branch Park must not be assigned here. Ask BCRP about actual endpoints, slopes and the remaining shore gap.

Open the county entrance directory ↗

Use the directory to check each entrance’s identity and status. Guide map pins are approximate shoreline locations, not turn-by-turn entrance directions or proof of current opening.

Known for

Baltimore Blueway identifies a soft-launch kayak beach here. The historic city Middle Branch plan describes a gently sloping pebble beach used for picnics and boat watching; that older description does not certify present facilities.

Rules & facilities

Check before you go

Confirm the lawful approach, current park notices, parking and facilities with BCRP before travel. Ordinary swimming is not recommended by Waterfront Partnership outside its designated events; check a dated forecast and marine notices, and follow current site postings.

Sources & review date ↗

Admission, payment & passes

No current ordinary admission charge, parking tariff or visitor pass requirement was established for the Ferry Bar shore. The Blueway’s parking indicator is not proof of free parking, and nearby business prices do not establish park charges.

What to bring & supporting visit details

Plan your visit

Plan a short shore visit or a prepared hand-carried launch. Find Ferry Bar Park by name at the end of the peninsula, check current arrival/parking notices, arrange toilets in advance, keep dogs leashed and allow room for launch users. Confirm boat handling and harbor conditions independently.

Public or private?

City park/public launch listed; check exact approach

Who can visit: The current city park GIS identifies Ferry Bar Park as a city-owned BCRP park, and Baltimore Blueway identifies its public soft-launch kayak beach. This establishes the named visitor shore/launch, without extending public rights across the adjoining Under Armour campus, private docks or every neighboring shoreline.

Entry route, fees & access boundaries
Manager / access authority
The city park GIS identifies Ferry Bar Park as owned and operated by BCRP. Contact Baltimore City Recreation and Parks; Waterfront Partnership operates the Blueway information program but is not assumed to regulate city park use.
Access basis
Read the public-use policy above.
Where to enter
Read the named entrance details.
Fees & reservations

Restrictions & exceptions

What this label covers
The named city park shore and listed public soft launch. Exact parking allocation, continuous accessible routes, adjoining private-campus crossings and current operation remain separately scoped; no continuous public shoreline or surveyed boundary is inferred.

Beach ownership, the route across land, public shoreline-use rights and access to facilities are separate questions. Rules vary by state and location. Use the identified public entrance or documented permission; neither a nearby resort nor an admission fee by itself establishes that a beach is private. A mapped beach is not permission to cross private property.

Access policy reviewed 2026-11-05. Not a live closure report or a property-boundary survey.

Allowed & prohibited activities

Alcohol: Baltimore City park rules prohibit alcohol except events with appropriate permits. A nearby restaurant’s alcohol service does not authorize drinking on this park shore.

Fires and grills: Baltimore City park rules require a permit for grill use and direct visitors to cool charcoal with water and use designated disposal containers. No separate beach bonfire permission was established for Ferry Bar.

Overnight camping: The city closes parks from sunset to sunrise except permitted activities and lit fields/courts. No public overnight camping area or camping permission was established at Ferry Bar; plan a day visit and ask BCRP about any exceptional permit.

Shore fishing: Shore fishing rules are not confirmed for this beach.

What still needs confirmation

The 2016 Port Covington plan describes Ferry Bar as a city-owned place used for respite and fishing. Current entrance-specific fishing designation and any license exception need manager confirmation; do not borrow Broening Park’s stated exemption. Consult Maryland fishing rules and MDE fish-consumption guidance separately.

Hours
Hours & seasonal limits

Baltimore City’s current park rule closes parks from sunset to sunrise, except park-permitted activities and lit fields/courts. Follow any more specific Ferry Bar notice; City Hall’s weekday office hours are not beach hours.

Ferry Bar Park Beach · hours ↗
Dogs on the beach
Leashed park visit · shoreline/water scope unconfirmed

Baltimore City park rules require a leash no longer than 6 feet and cleanup after pets. This is a leashed park visit, not a designated off-leash dog swimming beach. BringFido’s Baltimore beach search points to Downs Park outside the city and does not supply an exact Ferry Bar listing or shoreline water-use permission.

Ferry Bar Park Beach · dogs ↗
Lifeguards
Guard coverage unconfirmed

No Ferry Bar guard program, tower schedule or staffed swimming area was identified in the managing and Blueway sources. Plan a shore/launch visit without relying on lifeguard coverage; this is an unconfirmed service, not a verified permanent absence.

Ferry Bar Park Beach · lifeguards ↗
Restrooms
Facilities unconfirmed · see details

The reviewed Ferry Bar sources do not establish currently usable public toilets, showers or rinses at the park. Do not transfer toilets at Middle Branch Park, a restaurant or a hotel to this shore; arrange facilities before your visit and confirm with BCRP.

Access & beach rules
Rules & restrictions

Use the named public park shore and comply with city park rules and current posted limits. Public park access and a launch do not establish ordinary swimming, private dock access or a continuous accessible water-entry route. Full nudity and female-topless permission remain separate unresolved questions.

Ferry Bar Park Beach · public access rules ↗
Beach driving
Beach driving rules

The city prohibits vehicle parking on grass. A roadway approach and a hand-carried kayak launch do not authorize driving on the beach; no Ferry Bar beach-driving permit zone was established.

Conditions at the beach

Ferry Bar Park Beach · Baltimore City, Maryland. Local times use Eastern Time. No beach observation or saved forecast is displayed here. Forecast issue times, observation times, tide prediction dates and laboratory sample dates remain separate from desk-research dates. A linked source does not confirm current opening, a warning flag or swimming safety.

Weather observation

No exact on-beach weather observation or observation station is assigned here. The linked National Weather Service page provides forecast navigation; a forecast is a prediction, not an observed beach condition.

Responsible source ↗ · Responsible source ↗

Daily forecast

The independently checked National Weather Service point-forecast link is available for this approximate planning point. The returned source is a regional marine grid, with no county land zone assigned at this point. It is not a forecast of breaking surf at this beach. No saved numeric forecast is displayed here. Forecast issue and prediction times are separate from source review and are not on-beach observations.

Responsible source ↗ · Responsible source ↗

High & low tides

NOAA station 8574680 is Baltimore at Fort McHenry, a regional harbor reference away from Ferry Bar. Tide predictions are not observations at this shore, exact beach timing or a navigation waypoint.

Responsible source ↗ · Responsible source ↗

Surf & rip forecast

This is a tidal urban harbor launch shore. NWS returns marine zone ANZ 538; no named Ferry Bar surf or rip-current product was established. Do not import an Atlantic surf rating or treat forecast data as an observed safety flag.

Responsible source ↗ · Responsible source ↗

Closures & warning flags

Check Baltimore City Recreation and Parks and the Blueway before travel and follow local postings on arrival. No entrance-specific lifeguard tower or observed beach warning-flag feed was found for Ferry Bar; general harbor notices are not a flag observation here.

Responsible source ↗ · Responsible source ↗ · Responsible source ↗

Water quality

Waterfront Partnership recommends swimming only during scheduled events at designated locations, citing boat traffic, changing weather and intermittent pollution. Its five harbor sampling locations do not establish a current Ferry Bar sample. Harbor Splash 2026 has ended; a future event or historical sample is not ordinary swimming permission or current safety here.

Responsible source ↗ · Responsible source ↗

National Weather Service point forecast ↗ for the independently reviewed approximate planning point.

Crowd meter

No systematic or current beach-specific crowd evidence was established. Plan for a small shared shoreline and leave room for people launching hand-carried boats; no quietness or crowd rating is assigned.

Sources & review date ↗

Sand & sandcastles

The city Middle Branch plan describes Ferry Bar as a gently sloping pebble beach. It is a small harbor shoreline, not a broad sandcastle beach. That historical description and dated imagery do not establish today’s debris, footing or accessible surface.

Sources & review date ↗

Surfing profile

This guide covers a Middle Branch harbor shore and kayak launch, not an established surfing beach. No beach-specific surfing suitability assessment was found, so surfing remains unrated rather than receiving a default score.

Sources & review date ↗

Beachcombing

No reliable source established Ferry Bar as a shell-collecting destination or confirmed the collection rules for this park. Do not promise shell finds or authorize removal from the shore.

No reliable Ferry Bar-specific fossil or shark-tooth association was found. Fossil beaches elsewhere in Maryland do not establish finds or collection permission at this urban harbor shore.

Sources & review date ↗

Snorkeling & scuba diving

No documented Ferry Bar shore-snorkeling route or typical underwater-visibility assessment was established. The kayak launch and harbor swim events do not establish snorkeling suitability; clarity and shore snorkeling remain unassessed.

No verified scuba entry or boat-diving excursion departing Ferry Bar was established. Eastern Watersports’ regional scuba services and its separate Rye Street paddling base are not a Ferry Bar dive operator or shore route.

Sources & review date ↗

Clothing-optional, nudity & topless sunbathing

No clothing-optional designation or permission for full nudity was established in the reviewed official sources for Ferry Bar Park Beach. Ask Baltimore City Recreation & Parks about the current site-specific rule before planning this use.

Responsible source ↗ · Responsible source ↗ · Responsible source ↗ · Responsible source ↗ · Responsible source ↗

The reviewed official sources do not establish permission for female-topless sunbathing at Ferry Bar Park Beach. This remains a separate, unresolved question from full nudity; confirm the current site-specific rule with Baltimore City Recreation & Parks.

Responsible source ↗ · Responsible source ↗ · Responsible source ↗ · Responsible source ↗ · Responsible source ↗

Shore & sky wildlife

The Middle Branch waterfront provides local birdwatching context, but no beach-specific species checklist was established for this small shore. The city’s separate Middle Branch Park has an observatory and boardwalk; those facilities are not amenities at Ferry Bar.

Sources & review date ↗

History & interesting facts

The 2007 Middle Branch Master Plan identified Ferry Bar as a small passive park with a pebble beach for picnics and boat watching; the 2016 Port Covington plan listed city ownership and fishing use. These are historical planning records, not proof that proposed improvements or facilities are operating now.
