Parking, route & accessibility evidence

Parking & entry: Arrange permitted island transport. No road arrival: ferry, seaplane, private vessel or permitted charter. Ferry and seaplane arrive at Garden Key.

Parking source ↗

Accessibility: Check the exact usable route. NPS accessibility guidance, last updated November 28, 2018, describes advance-arranged ferry boarding assistance and a dock disembarkation ramp. This does not establish a continuous wheelchair route onto any of the three swimming beaches.

Where to enter
The named manager lists East Beach · Garden Key as a public visitor shoreline destination. Arrive on Garden Key, then follow designated swimming-area signs. Do not use the fort moat or harbor channel as an entry route. Admission, permitted arrival routes and current closures remain separate; this is not a present-opening guarantee.

Preserve source conflict and current FAQ instruction; seek clarification of obsolete text. Confirm the exact applicable rule with the managing authority before relying on a disputed schedule or permission.
Restrictions & exceptions
Use designated swim areas only; do not swim in harbor channels or the fort moat, dive from fort walls, or stand on coral/seagrass. Do not plan a landing at the finger piers or closed dinghy areas. Confirm the permitted landing and capacity with NPS before a private-vessel trip; public shoreline identity and current dock availability are separate.
What this label covers
Named shoreline eligibility, not current opening or approval of every historical entrance.

Beach ownership, the route across land, public shoreline-use rights and access to facilities are separate questions. Rules vary by state and location. Use the identified public entrance or documented permission; neither a nearby resort nor an admission fee by itself establishes that a beach is private. A mapped beach is not permission to cross private property.

Access policy reviewed 2026-10-04. Not a live closure report or a property-boundary survey.

Allowed & prohibited activities

No beach alcohol permission is asserted; check the manager’s posted rule before bringing alcohol.

No beach bonfire permission. Camping cooking is confined to designated campsite arrangements, with transporter fuel restrictions. Ground and wood fires are prohibited. On land, charcoal or camp-stove use is confined to the Garden Key campground; it is not permission for a beach bonfire. The compendium separately addresses use on private vessels.

Tent camping is in designated Garden Key sites, not anywhere along the beach. Ferry gear/fuel limits and separate campsite fees apply. Camping is confined to designated Garden Key campground sites; beach camping elsewhere is not authorized.

Published guidance for East Beach · Garden Key disagrees: NPS fishing page lists western finger piers in its summary but eastern finger piers in detailed rules. Garden Key page separately reports finger-pier/slip and adjacent dinghy-beach closures.. Do not recommend any finger-pier landing/fishing location. Ask NPS for current usable locations and reconcile the inconsistent inventory; preserve beach identity separately from facility closure.. Confirm the exact applicable rule with the managing authority before relying on a disputed schedule or permission.

Dogs on the beach
Restricted dog permission

Leashed dogs are allowed on Garden Key but not inside Fort Jefferson; pack out waste. This is island permission, not verified beach swimming or ferry pet permission. Leashed pets may use Garden Key outside Fort Jefferson, remaining on established paths and below beach vegetation. This is not proof of transport acceptance or permission to swim. Pets must remain leashed and attended on Garden Key, outside Fort Jefferson. NPS says the commercial ferry and seaplane do not carry ordinary pets; confirm transport separately. Avoid rat-control bait boxes and report exposed rodenticide to park staff.

Beachcombing

Snorkeling & scuba diving

Use the designated swim/snorkel areas. Historic moat-wall snorkeling is outside the moat; never enter the moat or use prohibited shoreline entry points.

The ferry and seaplane cannot carry compressed dive cylinders; scuba visitors need an appropriate private boat or charter arrangement.

Shore & sky wildlife

Park-wide wildlife evidence includes green/loggerhead nesting turtles and migrating birds, particularly in spring and fall. These are Dry Tortugas examples; no sighting or nesting location at this individual beach is guaranteed. NPS describes migratory birds and green/loggerhead turtle nesting across the islands. Local dining recommendations

There are no restaurants or food/drink shops inside the park. Bring your own supplies; limited ferry snacks and passenger meals do not create an island dining service.

Accommodations by the beach

Garden Key has primitive tent camping; arrange boat transport before planning a stay. Bring all food and fresh water, plus an extra day of supplies for possible ferry cancellation. No electric hookups, public cellular service or public Wi-Fi.

Activities & rentals

Use NPS-authorized transport/guide services. Private boat visitors must obtain the park boat permit; offshore excursions are distinct from a beach entrance. NPS maintains a permitted-tour directory for diving/snorkeling, wildlife tours and other services. Finz is listed for dive/snorkel and canoe/kayak excursions; verify the itinerary and whether Loggerhead visitation is included before booking.
