VIRGINIA · WATERFRONT RESEARCH
Alexandria waterfront
Alexandria is an independent city with public Potomac waterfront parks and trails. These places are retained as waterfront references; this review has not established a beach guide to publish.
Choose a waterfront visit
Jones Point provides fishing piers and a canoe launch. A named beach arrival is still unconfirmed.
Shipyard Park retains permanent public access to its riverside park and public wharf.
Rivergate has permanent public access to its waterfront park area despite association ownership of most of the park.
Natural shoreline under clarification
Windmill Hill has a natural shoreline. Its exact named sandy shore and lawful recreational sand arrival remain pending City clarification.
Check whose rules apply
Swimming and wading from shorelines managed by George Washington Memorial Parkway are prohibited. This restriction is scoped to NPS-managed areas.
Pets may not enter the Potomac River from GWMP-managed areas. This is not a rule for every City-owned park.
Founders Park has a dog exercise area in its northwest corner. Park dog permission does not establish off-leash use of all shore or water.
A park name that can mislead
Beach Park is a playground park named for Lillian Beach, not a coastal beach.
Sources and review scope
Source research reviewed 2026-10-26. This is a desk-research review, not a same-day inspection or an exhaustive shoreline survey. Each named reference retains its authority, activity and arrival scope.
