A beach day from Orlando: choose the right coast stop
Orlando is a region, not one departure point. The fastest route from the airport may differ from a hotel near the theme parks. Decide what you need at the beach before comparing drive estimates.
Our starting recommendation: Choose Cocoa Beach for a developed beach-town day; Cape Canaveral for its northern visitor district; Playalinda for a self-sufficient national-seashore visit subject to current restrictions.
Your shortlist
Cocoa Beach
Entrance to investigate: Lori Wilson Park or a named staffed tower
Choose it for: A developed beach day with facilities and separate nearby services.
Tradeoff: Tower schedules conflict across official pages; parking differs by entrance.
The Space Coast tourism office identifies State Road 528, the Beachline, as a route east from Orlando toward Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach. Promotional drive times are not live travel estimates. Check a current route from your actual address, tolls and legal parking at the entrance—not a shoreline map pin.
Cocoa Beach’s named park and tower options make a facilities-led visit easier to plan. A smaller street end may lack those services. Playalinda offers a different national-seashore experience without lifeguards; bring supplies and check NPS alerts before leaving.
Playalinda is approached through Titusville, not by driving through Apollo or Klondike. Northern Playalinda closures and suspended backcountry permits were still displayed by NPS on October 1. Do not use an unavailable park area as the final stop of a tightly timed airport day.
Selections are editorial advice. Official rules and dated notices have the narrower scopes described above. Conditions, staffing and surfaces can change; these pages do not guarantee current opening or safety. Photographs show the named beach, not every entrance or today’s condition; credits are in each full guide.
