New Hanover County beaches
Plan a coastal visit using separately researched municipal beaches, island shores and named lawful approaches. Each guide keeps its manager, entrance rules and current-source limits in view.
START WITH YOUR DAY
Find your fit in New Hanover County
6 published guides in this county. Start with restrooms (2 qualifying beaches), then compare the named entrances. 1 guide has boat-only arrival: plan transport and the lawful landing separately. Feature counts describe documented routes, not all beaches or every entrance in the county.
Use the verified route features below to choose where to begin. Counts refer to beaches with a qualifying named entrance, not every entrance. These are planning details, not current opening or guard duty.
A few places to start
Starting points ranked by verified entrance facilities; these are not a county-wide quality ranking.

Municipal strands, Freeman Park, Fort Fisher and Masonboro retain their separately managed rules and approaches. An oceanfront address, nearby ramp or transport service does not establish a public crossing or permitted island landing.
Use the guide's exact entrance for parking, toilets, rinse facilities, wheelchair arrangements and route endpoints. A wheelchair or boardwalk does not establish continuous access across sand to the water.

Wrightsville Beach
Wrightsville Beach offers numbered ocean crossovers, seasonal Ocean Rescue and several restrooms. Choose a public crossover rather than a resort path; the Salisbury mat has condition-dependent accessibility.
Carolina Beach
Carolina Beach combines a municipal ocean strand with the Boardwalk. Its alcohol, pet, fire and driving rules differ from the separately managed Freeman Park.
Freeman Park
Freeman Park is the Town-managed beach at the north end of Canal Drive, with permitted four-wheel-drive access. Northern vehicle areas remain closed because of erosion, and overnight camping is suspended.
Kure Beach
Kure Beach is a compact Town ocean destination with public crossovers, a boardwalk and seasonal guards. Use an alternative to I Avenue during the October 2026 walkway repairs.
Fort Fisher State Recreation Area
Fort Fisher State Recreation Area offers an ocean pedestrian beach and a separate permitted four-wheel-drive beach. The salt-marsh Basin Trail is a distinct route, not an ocean accessibility guarantee.
Masonboro Island Reserve
Masonboro Island Reserve is an undeveloped barrier island reached only by boat. Use suitable soundside sandy landings and existing trails; camping and natural-resource protections have specific reserve rules.
Check the local rules and conditions
Dog seasons, parking payment windows, shoreline use and guard coverage must match the selected entrance. North Carolina laboratory samples retain their exact station and sample dates; regional forecasts, tides and observed warning flags are separate evidence.
Typical underwater clarity, shore snorkeling and boat excursions are researched independently. Missing evidence is not a positive feature match.
Research scope and photographs
The October 9, 2026 desk review covers 6 published guides and all required guide categories. It is not an exhaustive shoreline survey, on-site inspection or same-day safety check. Unresolved identities and exact approaches remain in the research queue.
Only exact-location photographs with individually verified reuse rights depict named beaches. Historical scenery does not establish present facilities, access or safety.
