Gates County coastal scope
Gates County identifies itself with the Inner Banks, and its certified comprehensive plan documents estuarine waters along the Chowan River. This review has not established a qualified named coastal beach guide with an exact lawful beach arrival. That does not mean Gates has no beaches or public shoreline.
Gatesville launch closure
NCWRC lists Gatesville Boating Access Area closed for repairs from October 1, 2026 until further notice. Check the responsible agency before planning a launch; a historical access observation is not current opening.
Chowan River boating references
NCWRC lists Shoups Landing at 120 Shoups Landing Road for boat and canoe access. This is a boating reference, not a beach recommendation. Launch accessibility, fishing opportunities and public-trust water status do not establish a sand swimming route or rights to cross private land.

Separate inland and unresolved places
Merchants Millpond is an inland lake and swamp park, separate from the coastal beach inventory. Bennetts Creek park and game-land maps remain scoped access references. The Chowan Swamp map spans several counties and includes restricted approaches; mapped hunting, canoe or parking locations are not public beach parents. Gatlington and other historical landing leads need current managing-authority and arrival verification.

What remains unresolved
No clothing-optional, full-nudity, female-topless, typically clear-water or shore-snorkeling eligibility has been established for a named Gates coastal beach. Those questions stay independent; lake/trail dog listings, regional bacteria results, water color and forecasts cannot establish them. Scenic photography remains unassigned until an exact qualifying beach and individual reuse rights are established.
