Dare County beaches

Plan a coastal visit using separately researched named Atlantic beaches and separate Sound-side shores. Each guide keeps its manager, entrance rules and current-source limits in view.

Find your fit in Dare County

15 published guides in this county. Start with restrooms (9 qualifying beaches) or dogs allowed (1 qualifying beach), then compare the named entrances. Feature counts describe documented routes, not all beaches or every entrance in the county.

Use the verified route features below to choose where to begin. Counts refer to beaches with a qualifying named entrance, not every entrance. These are planning details, not current opening or guard duty.

Choose a named shore and arrival

Each named beach retains its responsible manager and separately documented arrival. Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head have municipal entrances and their own dog and parking rules. NPS day-use beaches, refuge shorelines and conditional ORV approaches remain separate. Buxton Beach Access parking and walkover are closed despite the adjacent shore reopening in May 2026. Duck and Southern Shores controlled arrivals are not assumed available to every visitor.

Use the guide's exact entrance for parking, toilets, rinse facilities, wheelchair arrangements and route endpoints. A wheelchair or boardwalk does not establish continuous access across sand to the water.

Every published Dare County beach guide

Kitty Hawk Beach

Municipal Atlantic beach with a named bathhouse arrival, showers and seasonal ocean rescue. Dog leash rules change by season and time of day.

Kill Devil Hills Beach

Municipal Atlantic beach with a bathhouse at Ocean Bay Boulevard. The town describes a beach access mat, which may need maintenance after weather.

Nags Head Beach

Municipal Atlantic beach with separately listed Bonnett Street and Hargrove bathhouse arrivals. Guard coverage and mats vary by entrance and season.

Coquina Beach

NPS Atlantic beach with a bathhouse, seasonal showers and a designated summer lifeguard program. Its boardwalk and parking limitations need separate planning.

Frisco Beach

NPS Atlantic day-use beach with a bathhouse, seasonal showers and a summer lifeguard program. Shifting sand may affect the boardwalk approach.

Salvo Soundside Beach

Pamlico Sound day-use shore with a ramped bathhouse, seasonal showers and paddling facilities. Ocean guard coverage is not inherited.

Haulover Soundside Beach (Canadian Hole)

Pamlico Sound shore at Haulover Day Use Area, also called Canadian Hole. Kite and wind sports have exact power-line restrictions; a shallow-water description is not a safety guarantee.

Jockey’s Ridge Soundside Beach

State park Soundside swimming beach on Roanoke Sound, reached from Soundside Road. Its gate hours differ from the main park and visitor center.

Pea Island Beach

Refuge Atlantic shore with visitor-center parking opposite NC 12. Posted crossing, wildlife closures and refuge rules govern; interior ponds are not swimming destinations.

Old Lighthouse Beach

Buxton Atlantic shore at Old Lighthouse Beach, with a separate public lot. The nearby Buxton Beach Access parking lot and walkover remain closed despite the adjacent beach reopening in May 2026.

Rodanthe Beach

Rodanthe public Atlantic beach access with a bathhouse and dune-top accessible boardwalk. This does not establish a step-free route across sand to the water.

Oregon Inlet Beach

Atlantic inlet shore approached through Bodie Island Ramp 4. Pedestrian and permit-required ORV access depend on exact posted closures and directions.

Cape Point Beach

Cape Point Atlantic shore approached through Ramp 44. Resource closures and route restrictions are separate from a beach name or ORV permit.

Hatteras Village Beach

Hatteras village Atlantic shore approached through Ramp 55 near the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum. Seasonal route restrictions and sand gaps remain separately scoped.

Avon Beach

Avon Atlantic shore approached through Ramps 34 and 38. Exact directions, closures and seasonal ORV limits must be checked before travel.

Check the local rules and conditions

Dog seasons, parking payment windows, shoreline use and guard coverage must match the selected entrance. North Carolina laboratory samples retain their exact station and sample dates; regional forecasts, tides and observed warning flags are separate evidence.

Typical underwater clarity, shore snorkeling and boat excursions are researched independently. Missing evidence is not a positive feature match.

Research scope and photographs

The October 11, 2026 desk review covers 15 published guides and all required guide categories. It is not an exhaustive shoreline survey, on-site inspection or same-day safety check. Unresolved identities and exact approaches remain in the research queue.

Only exact-location photographs with individually verified reuse rights depict named beaches. Historical scenery does not establish present facilities, access or safety.
